Inviting to Islam through the scriptures of the People of the Book | Imām Muqbil al-Wādiʿī

Q. Oh Shaykh! There is a man who has memorized the Bible and calls to the Christians, rather debates them through their book. Is this permissible for him?

Imām Muqbil regarding doing Da’wah through the scriptures of the disbelievers and debating them

A. The Prophet ﷺ said as it comes in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī,

“Do not believe the people of the scripture nor disbelieve them, for either you will believe in falsehood or you will belie the truth”

Basis of the Ḥadīth found in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 4485[1]

What is apparent is that, “for either you will believe in falsehood or you will reject the truth” is not in al-Bukhārī[2]

And Ibn ʿAbbās رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ said,

“Indeed your book is the latest covenant from your Rabb, so have you seen any one from the people of the book (i.e. the Jews and the Christians) ask you all?”

Basis of the Ḥadīth found in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 7363[3]

So what is intended is that he has not been granted success with the correct path. Allāh ﷻ says in His Noble Book,

“Then in which speech after Allah and His Āyāt (verses) will they believe?”

Surah al-Jāthiyah 45:6

And the Prophet ﷺ used to recite the Qur’ān upon the disbelievers of Quraish when they would approach. Until Jubair bin Muṭʿim رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ came and the Prophet (ﷺ) was reciting Surah aṭ-Ṭūr in the Maghrib prayer and he reached,

“Were they created by nothing, Or were they themselves the creators”

Surah aṭ-Ṭūr 52:35

Jubair رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ said, and at that time he had not yet accepted Islam,

“My heart almost flew out.”

Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 4854[4]

And in another narration:

“And I felt belief (Īmān) in my heart (for the first time)”

Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 4023[5]

So I advice you all to invite the people with the Book of Allāh and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ

Translator’s Footnotes:

  1. Narrated Abu Hurairah:

The people of the Scripture (Jews) used to recite the Torah in Hebrew and they used to explain it in Arabic to the Muslims. On that Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “Do not believe the people of the Scripture or disbelieve them, but say:– “We believe in Allah and what is revealed to us.” (2:136)

    Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 4485
  2. Musnad Ahmad 14404
  3. Narrated Ubaidullah

Ibn `Abbas said, “Why do you ask the people of the scripture about anything while your Book (Qur’an) which has been revealed to Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) is newer and the latest? You read it pure, undistorted and unchanged, and Allah has told you that the people of the scripture (Jews and Christians) changed their scripture and distorted it, and wrote the scripture with their own hands and said, ‘It is from Allah,’ to sell it for a little gain. Does not the knowledge which has come to you prevent you from asking them about anything? No, by Allah, we have never seen any man from them asking you regarding what has been revealed to you!”

    Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 7363
  4. Narrated Jubair bin Muṭʿim

I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) reciting Surat at-Tur in the Maghrib prayer, and when he reached the Verse: ‘Were they created by nothing, Or were they themselves the creators, Or did they create the Heavens and the Earth? Nay, but they have no firm belief Or do they own the treasures of Your Lord? Or have they been given the authority to do as they like…’ (52:35-37) my heart was about to fly (when I realized this firm argument).

    Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 4854
  5. Narrated Jubair bin Muṭʿim

I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) reciting Surat-at-Tur in Maghrib prayer, and that was at a time when belief was first planted in my heart.

    Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 4023
