Innovation is Praiseworthy Only in Worldly Affairs | Shaykh Al-Albānī

Shaykh Al-Albānī regarding the principle of innovation in the religion and worldly affairs

All praise and thanks are due to Allāh; we seek His Help and we seek His Forgiveness. We seek refuge with Him from the evil of our souls and the evil of our actions. Whosoever Allāh guides then none can misguide him, and whosoever Allāh leaves to stray then none can guide him. I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allāh alone, the One Who has no partner and we bear witness that Muḥammad (ﷺ) is his servant and Messenger.

As for what follows: Verily the most truthful speech is the Word of Allāh and the best guidance is the guidance of Muḥammad (ﷺ), and the worst of affairs are the newly invented matters (in the religion) and every newly invented matter is an innovation and every innovation is going astray and every going astray is in the Fire.

Perhaps all the brothers present will know the significance of this ḥadīth and its likes, which is proven in the books of the Sunnah with an authentic chain of transmission to the Prophet ﷺ such as the ḥadīth of ‘Ā’ishah

“If anyone introduces into this affair of ours (i.e. Islam) anything which does not belong to it, it is rejected (by Allāh).”

Agreed upon

And likewise the ḥadīth of al-‘Irbād bin Sāriyah, -may Allāh be pleased with him- said:
“The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ, gave us a sermon from which the hearts were reverberated and eyes shed tears, so we said: O Messenger of Allāh, advice us.” He said:

“I advise you to fear Allāh, to listen and to obey, even if an Abyssinian slave is appointed over you, and whoever lives amongst you will see much discord. So upon you is to adhere to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the Rightly-Guided Caliphs after me, cling onto it with your molar teeth. Beware of the newly invented matters, for every newly invented matter is an innovation, and every innovation is a misguidance”.

Abū Dāwūd 4607, Graded Authentic by al-Albānī

These narrations confirm what I think you understand and believe: that innovation in religion is all misguidance, and I mean in religion, because innovation that is blameworthy is specifically in the religion. As for worldly matters, some of it is praised, and some of it is blameworthy, according to this newly introduced affair. If it contradicts the Sharī’ah, then it is blameworthy, and if it does not contradict the Sharī’ah, then it is at the least, permissible. One of the best quotes in this context, is the speech of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah -may Allāh have mercy on him-. Whereas, he laid a very important foundation, he very much derived it from those ḥadīths in addition to other texts which indicate that the basic principle in things is permissibility, and this is a fundamental principle. He said, -may Allāh have mercy on him-:

“The principle in religion is abstention except with a textual evidence (that proves permissibility), and the principle in this world is permissibility except with a textual evidence (that proves impermissibility).”

It means: Every innovation in the religion is forbidden. As for an innovation in this world, it is permissible unless it contradicts a textual proof as we mentioned, then what should be cautioned is that his saying, ﷺ:

“And beware of newly invented matters”

Abu Dāwūd 4607, Graded Authentic by al-Albānī

Means every act of worship that took place after the Prophet ﷺ, so it is a misguidance, even if it is in the opinion of many people that they think it is good. And in truth, ‘Abdullāh bin ‘Umar bin al-Khattāb -may Allāh be pleased with him-, said:

“Every innovation is a misguidance, even if people see it as good.”

205, Ibn Battah in al-Ibānah and 104, Al-Lālikā’ī

That is because approval in religion means that this person who recommended the act is pairing himself with the Rabb (Lord) of the worlds, which no one else can legislate except what Allāh The Almighty wills. For this reason, Imām al-Shāfi’ī, may Allāh have mercy on him, said:

“He who approves, has legislated.”

Because the one who approves, does not know that, that which he has approved, is by his intellect and thought only, and he did not derive that from the Book of his Rabb or from the Sunnah of his Prophet. How would he know that this is a good thing?! For this reason, it is incumbent upon everyone of us that our position on every newly introduced affair in the religion is to abstain from it on the basis of the aforementioned authentic narrations.
