Why did France revive the celebration of Mawlid ???
(The Egyptian historian, ʿAbdur-Raḥmān) Al-Jabartī -may Allāh have mercy on him- (1753–1825) said:
“When Napoleon Bonaparte (1769 – 1821) occupied Egypt, the Sufis and the people of Mawlid shrank, and their activity weakened.
In 1798, the military commander inquired about the Prophet’s birthday and why it was not being celebrated as usual. So Shaykh (Khalil) al-Bakrī (died 1808) sought excuse, citing the stagnation of affairs, the disruption of matters, and a lack of funds. So the commander insisted, “It must be done”, and ordered that French currency worth three hundred be given to aid them in reviving the celebration. So they hung ropes and lanterns, and the French gathered with them, they beat their drums, and set off fireworks and things like rockets that rose into the air.”

You will find the answer with the historian himself, where he -may Allāh have mercy on him- says:
“The French permitted this for the people because they saw in it: a departure from religious laws, the mixing of men and women, the pursuit of desires, frivolous entertainment, and the commission of forbidden acts…”

قال الجبرﺗﻲ -ﺭﺣﻤﻪ ﺍﻟﻠﻪ- :
“ﻋﻨﺪﻣﺎ ﺍﺣﺘﻞ ﻧﺎﺑﻠﻴﻮﻥ ﺑﻮﻧﺎﺑﺮﺕ ﻣﺼﺮ، ﺍﻧﻜﻤﺶ ﺍﻟﺼّﻮفية ﻭﺃﺻﺤﺎﺏُ ﺍﻟﻤﻮﺍﻟِﺪ، ﻭﺿﻌُﻒ ﻧﺸﺎﻃُﻬﻢ.
ﻭﻓﻲ ﺳﻨﺔ (١٧٩٨ﻡ)، ﺳﺄﻝ ﻗﺎﺋﺪَ ﺍﻟﻌﺴﻜﺮ ﻋﻦ ﺍﻟﻤﻮﻟﺪِ ﺍﻟﻨّﺒﻮﻱ ﻭﻟﻤﺎﺫﺍ ﻟﻢ ﻳﻌﻤﻠﻮﻩ ﻛﻌﺎﺩﺗﻬﻢ ، ﻓﺎﻋﺘﺬﺭ ﺍﻟﺸﻴﺦ ﺍﻟﺒﻜﺮﻱّ ﺑﺘﻮﻗُّﻒ ﺍﻷﺣﻮﺍﻝ، ﻭﺗﻌﻄُّﻞ ﺍﻷﻣﻮﺭ، ﻭﺍﻧﻌﺪﺍﻡ ﺍﻟﻤﺼﺎﺭﻳﻒ. ﻓﻘﺎﻝ ﻟﻪ ﺍﻟﻘﺎﺋﺪ: ﻻبد ﻣﻦ ﺫﻟﻚ ، ﻓﺄﻣﺮ ﻟﻪ ﺑﺜﻼﺛﻤﺎﺋﺔ ﺭﻳﺎﻝ ﻓﺮﻧﺴﻴّﺔ، ﻳﺴﺘﻌﻴﻨﻮﻥ ﺑﻬﺎ ﻋﻠﻰ ﺇﺣﻴﺎﺀ ﺍﻟﻤﻮﻟﺪ. فعلَّقوا ﺣِﺒﺎﻻً ﻭﻗﻨﺎﺩﻳﻞَ، ﻭﺍﺟﺘﻤﻊ ﻣﻌﻬﻢ ﺍﻟﻔﺮﻧﺴﻴﻮﻥ، ﻭﺩﻗُّﻮﺍ ﻃﺒﻮﻟَﻬﻢ، ﻭﺃﺣﺮﻗﻮﺍ ﺍﻟﺤﺮّﺍﻗﺎﺕ، ﻭﺃﺷﻴﺎﺀ ﺃﻣﺜﺎﻝ ﺍﻟﺼﻮﺍﺭﻳﺦ ﺗﺼﻌﺪ ﻓﻲ ﺍﻟﻬﻮﺍﺀ”.
*ﻓﺈﺫﺍ ﺳﺄﻟﺖ ﻋﻦ ﻫﺪﻑ ﻧﺎﺑﻠﻴﻮﻥ ﻭﺟﻨﻮﺩِﻩ ﻣﻦ ﻭﺭﺍﺀ ﺫﻟﻚ كله؟؟*
فإنك ﺗﺠﺪ ﺍﻟﺠﻮﺍﺏَ ﻟﺪﻯ المؤرخ نفسه ﺣﻴﺚ ﻳﻘﻮﻝ ﺭﺣﻤﻪ ﺍﻟﻠﻪ:
*”ﻭﺭﺧَّﺺ ﺍﻟﻔﺮﺍﻧﺴﺎﻭﻳﺔ ﺫﻟﻚ ﻟﻠﻨّﺎﺱ؛ ﻟِﻤَﺎ ﺭﺃﻭﺍ ﻓﻴﻪ ﻣﻦ: ﺍﻟﺨﺮﻭﺝ ﻋﻦ ﺍﻟﺸّﺮﺍﺋﻊ، ﻭﺍﺟﺘﻤﺎﻉ ﺍﻟﻨّﺴﺎﺀ ﺑﺎﻟﺮّﺟﺎﻝ، ﻭﺍﺗّﺒﺎﻉ ﺍﻟﺸّﻬﻮﺍﺕ، ﻭﺍﻟﺘّﻼﻫﻲ ﻭﻓﻌﻞ ﺍﻟﻤﺤﺮّﻣﺎﺕ …”.*
