The Conditions of Friendship | Ibn Juzay al-Kalbī

The Jurist, Ibn Juzay al-Mālikī[1] -May Allāh have mercy on him- said:

“As for the friend, then his conditions are seven:

First, that he be Sunni in his creed.

Second, that he be devout in his religion, for if he were to be an innovator or a sinner, perhaps he may drag his companion towards his ideology, or the people may assume that way about him, for indeed, a person is upon the religion of his companion.[2]

Third, that he be a person of intellect, for the companionship of the foolish is a misfortune.

Fourth, that he be well-mannered, for if he were to be ill-mannered, you would not be safe from his aggression. And test him to see if he gets agitated and if he gets angry then leave off his companionship.

Fifth, that he be sound-hearted both in presence and in absence, not hateful, not envious, not one who desires evil, and not two-faced.

Sixth, that he be firm in his commitment and not uneasy and wavering.

Seventh, that he upholds your rights just as you uphold his rights, for there is no goodness in companionship of one who does not see that you have rights like you see that he has.”
