Ruling on Ifṭār Gatherings | The Permanent Committee

﷽

Q: I heard from some brothers that having a gathering for breaking the fast is an innovation (bidʿah). Is this true?

A: There is nothing wrong with having a gathering for breaking the fast during Ramaḍān and at other times, as long as this gathering is not considered an act of worship. This is based on the verse:

{لَيْسَ عَلَيْكُمْ جُنَاحٌ أَنْ تَأْكُلُوا جَمِيعًا أَوْ أَشْتَاتًا}

“There is no sin upon you whether you eat together or apart”

Surat An-Nur: 61

However, if it is feared that having a gathering to break a voluntary fast might lead to riyā’ and seeking fame, due to the fasting people distinguishing themselves from others, then it is disliked for them to do so.

And with Allāh is success, and may Allāh’s peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
